How to Make Peony Wedding Boutonnieres

Every detail at your wedding can help you create a beautiful scene, down to the last suit lapel. If you want to help your suit-wearing guests bring a little color to their attire, a boutonniere provides a wonderful opportunity for expression.

Today, we’re here to show you how to make mini boutonnieres using Ling’s Moment flowers and greenery. These colorful boutonnieres are ideal for grooms and groomsmen and would also make beautiful accessories for any wedding guest in a suit.

What you’ll need to make a DIY boutonniere:

To make your mini boutonnieres, you’ll need:

  • Small pearl beads
  • Iron wires
  • Twine
  • Pliers
  • Scissors
  • Floral tape
  • Your creative spirit

You’ll only need a handful of flowers to make a single boutonniere, and we only need the accessories from the flower box sets. So, if you’ve already made a bridal bouquet and have materials leftover, this is an excellent way to put them to good use. Not only will you be able to use leftover flowers, but you’ll also ensure that your boutonnieres match seamlessly with your bridal and bridesmaid bouquets.

We’re fond of peonies for their delicacy and fullness, but you can use any medium-sized flower you like to make your boutonniere, like roses, dahlias, or even small sunflowers. You can also mix and match your favorite greenery to complement your choice of flowers. For added personalization, invite the guest who will wear the boutonniere to offer input during the design process.

How to make peony wedding boutonnieres

Step 1: Make a beaded accent

Let’s begin by preparing a beaded accent for our boutonniere.

Start by taking a bead and threading it onto a piece of wire. Fold the wire in half and twist several times to tighten it. Then add another bead to each wire extension and do the same thing. You should end up with a “trident-shaped” arrangement of three beads branching out from the central wire.

Snip off the excess wire and set the beaded accent piece aside when you're finished.

Step 2: Make a mini floral arrangement

Now, let’s make a small floral arrangement for our boutonniere.

Snip a handful of leaves off your greenery spray and arrange them behind a flower of your choice – a small peony, in our case. Next, grab your beaded accent from before and other small accent pieces from your designer box sets. Arrange them alongside your flower to bring detail and color to the overall design.

When you’re happy with how it looks, trim all the stems to a uniform length - around 2 inches.

Step 3: Secure the boutonniere

Now that you’re happy with the main body of your floral arrangement, it’s time to hold it in place. Tie a wire around all the stems, then wrap all the wires with green floral tape. This will hold the boutonniere together and prevent sharp wires from poking the wearer.

Next, wrap the stems with string to create a tidy finishing touch.

Step 4: Add a ribbon

We’re nearly done! Now it’s time to add one last finishing touch.

Take a piece of sheer ribbon in a color that compliments your boutonniere - dusty pink, in our case – and tie a loose bow around the base of your flowers. The bow should be visible when wearing the lapel and ideally create a cascading effect that draws the eye to the flowers. You can use a small pin to attach the boutonniere onto a suit lapel or dress shirt.

Step 5: All finished

Congratulations! Now that your beautiful new peony boutonniere is finished, it’s ready to be worn for a trip to the alter. You can repeat the process as many times as you need to create more boutonnieres for other wedding guests.
